Senior Deputy Superintendent of Police, Anisul Karim, died four minutes after being beaten after being admitted to hospital. He was admitted to the Mind Aid Hospital in Adabar in the capital for mental problems. Anisul, who was appointed as a police officer in the 31st BCS, last worked for the Barisal Metropolitan Police. His home is in Kapasia, Gazipur.

He died within minutes of admission on Monday morning. The family alleges that he was beaten to death by hospital staff shortly after his admission. Police arrested six people, including the hospital director, for questioning. Hospital authorities claimed that they were trying to calm the police officer by behaving in a rude manner.

Anisul Karim is the father of a son. He was a student of group 33 of the Department of Biochemistry and Biopsychology at Jahangirnagar University. His brother Rezaul Karim said: ‘His brother suffered from mental problems due to family problems. He was taken to Mind Aid Hospital around 11:30 today. While he was filling out the intake form at the counter, some employees took him to the second floor. Soon after, they were informed that Anisul was unconscious. Then they rushed him to the Heart Institute. The doctor examined him and declared him dead.

Police have collected CCTV footage from the hospital. It is seen that around 11:55 pm, the police officer Anisul Karim was dragged into a room. He was thrown to the ground by six hospital employees. Then two more blue-clad employees grabbed him by the leg. At that time, two employees on the side of the head were hitting him with their elbows. Arif Mahmud, the director of the hospital, was next to him. Anisul’s hand is tied behind his back with a piece of blue cloth.

When Anisul rolled onto his stomach four minutes later, his body was numb. Then an employee sprayed water on his face. Anisul Karim was not moving even then. Then the staff cleaned the floor in the room. Seven minutes later, a woman wearing a white apron entered the room. The bedroom door closed in 11 minutes. A woman wearing a white apron had her breast pumped in 13 minutes.

Rezaul Karim added: “His brother had a blood pressure problem. There was also some heart disease. But none of these were obvious. He died after being beaten by hospital officials and employees.

Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Officer-in-Charge (CO) Jane Alam Mia said: “Anisul died before she was taken there.”

Mrityunjay Dey, Additional Deputy Commissioner, Tejgaon Division, Dhaka Metropolitan Police, said: “They have collected CCTV footage from the hospital. Six officers and employees have been detained for questioning. Anisul’s body has been subjected to an autopsy. What happened will be known during questioning.
