Lebanon’s ambassador to Germany, Mustafa Adib, has been appointed the country’s new prime minister after a terrible explosion in a Beirut port over chemical stocks. Adib, 48, was born to a Sunni Muslim family in the northern city of Tripoli. He also has a doctorate after studying political science.

Mustafa Adib’s name was announced as the new prime minister on Monday (August 31) after a majority in a vote in the country’s parliament.

In a televised address from the president’s office, Lebanese President Michael Aoun announced the name of the new prime minister. Later, Mustafa met with President Aoun and the Speaker of Parliament, Nabih Berri, at the Presidential Palace near Babdar in Beirut.

Lebanon’s new prime minister, Mustafa Adib, said he hoped to implement major reforms as soon as the government was formed.

Mustafa Adib won an overwhelming majority in parliament. In the 120-member parliament, 90 people voted for him. MPs from the country’s political parties, Hezbollah and its allies, the Free Patriotic Movement, the Amal Movement, the Future Movement of former Prime Minister Saad Hariri, and some other parties also voted for Mustafa.

Protests broke out in Lebanon on Aug. 4 after a massive explosion at a chemical warehouse in the country’s Beirut port killed nearly 200 people. In the face of public outrage, Prime Minister Hassan Diab was forced to resign.
