After establishing a much discussed illegal seaport at Brishalikha Ghat in Pabna’s Bera upazila, this time a nasty incident took place regarding the leasing of Kazirhat and Nagarbari ghats from upazila.

He lobbied Bera Upazila Nirbahi (UNO) officer Asif Anam Siddiqui to unofficially pass a resolution on the leasing of Kazirhat and Nagarbari Ghats. But when the UNO didn’t do that, the mayor started abusing him and at one point he left the chair and killed him.

The incident took place at noon on Monday (October 12) at a meeting of the public order committee in the Upazila Parishad conference room. Referring to the incident, UNO has filed a written complaint with senior officials, including the Deputy Commissioner of Pabna.

Pabna Deputy Commissioner Kabir Mahmud acknowledged the incident, saying late Monday that the Mayor of Bera Municipality, Abdul Baten, had lobbied UNO Asif Anam Siddiqui to pass a written resolution on the leasing of the ghats of Kazirhat and Nagarbari in upazila. But the UN refused to approve the matter because it was out of politics. Later, Mayor Abdul Baten treated him rudely.

He said that the upper echelons of the government have been informed about this. The next step will be taken according to the instructions of the Ministry of Public Administrations.

In this regard, the representatives of several people present at the meeting said that the issue of the lease of the Kazirhat and Nagarbari ghats of the upazila was out of jurisdiction and was not legal and the Official of Upazila Nirbahi refused to approve it.

At this time, the mayor of the municipality of Bera, Abdul Baten, got emotional. He began to abuse the officer of Upazila Nirbahi in vulgar language. At one point, he got up from the chair and tried to push her away.

Others present at the meeting tried to stop him. Everyone present at the meeting was shocked by the suddenness of the incident. Later, the meeting became useless. A president of the UP, who did not want to be named, said that it was not correct for the mayor to do so. This tarnished his personal image and that of the Awami League.

Bera Upazila Nirbahi’s officer, Asif Anam Siddiqui, said that an unfortunate incident had occurred. Details of the incident have been reported to higher authorities. He didn’t mean much of that.

The municipal mayor of Bera, Abdul Baten, called his mobile phone more than once to discuss the matter, but did not receive it.

The meeting was attended by the acting president of Bera Upazila, Mezbah Uddin, the president of Puran Varenga UP, Rafiqullah, the president of Jatsakini UP, Rezaul Haque Babu, the president of Rooppur UP, Ujjwal Hossain, the police officer in charge of Aminpur , Mozammel Haque, the Bera police officer in charge, Abul Kasarers, and other officials from the government office.

The district Awami League fired him from all positions, including the position of president of the Upazila Awami League, following Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s instructions for lobbying on behalf of a UP president for stealing rice.

Previously, the mayor of Bera Municipality had established an illegal sea port at Brishalikha Ghat in Bera upazila de Pabna. The ghat was operated illegally with evasion of government revenue. Then, on December 9 last year, BIWTA vacated the illegal port built at Brishalikha Ghat in Pabna’s Bera upazila. That day, more than a hundred small and large structures built around the port were evicted. Five people were arrested. This time he was embroiled in scandals by passing resolutions on the leasing of Kazirhat and Nagarbari Ghats.
