Leaders and activists of various left-wing organizations have been reported to have been targeted in a long anti-rape march from Dhaka to Noakhali on Friday.
More than 400 leaders and activists from left-wing organizations started a long march from Dhaka on Friday morning demanding justice for the rape. They met at different locations along the way and stayed in Feni for the night.
Masud Rana, president of the Socialist Student Front, who took part in a long march from Dhaka, alleged that some of the participants attacked some of the participants at a rally at the Shaheed Minar in Feni on Saturday morning.
Rana said: ‘During the demonstration, locals clashed with leaders and activists. Our bus was attacked while getting into a car some distance from the rally site. Almost all buses were vandalized, at least 40 leaders and activists were injured.
Citing the locals, Masood Rana alleged that the attackers were involved with the ruling Awami League.
However, the general secretary of the Awami Feni Sadar Upazila League, Sushen Chandra Shil, said that no one was involved in the Awami League, but the local people were angry and attacked them.
Sushen Shil said: “Local MP Nizam Hazari has four posters with photographs of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina where they were holding the demonstration. People in your assembly have written offensive words like “rapist’s guard”, “rapist’s godfather” and “rapist” with red markers on those posters.
‘Seeing these writings on the photos of Bangabandhu and the Prime Minister, the local people got angry and attacked them. Awami League or Chhatra League has nothing to do with attack.
A statement from the Feni District Awami League said the clashes were an attempt by the participants in the long march to create chaos and that the Awami League or the Chhatra League had nothing to do with it.
What do the police say?
The officer in charge of the Feni Model Police Station, Alamgir Hossain, admitted to attacking the participants in the long march, but said that a maximum of “four or five” people were injured in the incident.
Alamgir Hossain said: “Supporters of the local deputy attacked the local deputy on the banner with the image of Bangabandhu and the prime minister and wrote ‘Guard of the rapists'”.
Alamgir Hossain said that although there was not much confrontation in the first phase, when the members who participated in the long march began to return to their buses, MP supporters chanted slogans against them and then the two sides became involved in clashes.
Alamgir Hossain confirmed that the participants in the long march had written the writings on the poster in front of the police.
He said: “During the demonstration, they wrote in red ink on posters in front of members of the police. Although the police forbade them at the time, they behaved aggressively.
