The mother sold her day-old son for Rs 20,000 to pay off the loan. The mother now cries day and night, handing the child over to someone else. The older brother left the house out of pride, as he could not stay with his newborn brother.

The woman named Hasina Begum is the wife of Joktar Ali from Teparhat village in Sarpukur, union of Aditmari upazila from Lalmonirhat. She is the daughter of the late Azizar Rahman from the Haridas Nayatari village in the same area.

Hasina is known to have married Joktar Ali from the same village 18-20 years ago. But Hasina was Joktar’s second wife. Although she stayed at her husband’s home for a few days of their marriage, Hasina, who is mentally disabled, stayed at her father’s home in Taluk Haridas Nayati.

Although she did not pay for the family, her husband Jokta was in a relationship with Hasina. Meanwhile, a daughter and two sons were born into her family. The eldest daughter married Rosner.

Hasina Begum, who is mentally disabled, leads her family by working as a farm laborer with her two sons Hasan and Russell in the only cabin. Unemployed Hasina Begum went into debt to the tune of Tk 10,000 due to the coronation and lack of work in the fields.

Meanwhile, on Tuesday (October 6) morning, Hasina Begum gave birth to a boy. Hasina is worried about her son in a needy family. However, his childless brother Keramat Ali expressed his desire to take his sister’s son.

But neighbor Adhir Chandra asked his in-laws to give the child to a couple from the Rajarhat area of Kurigram. Hasina Begum and her eldest son Hasan prevented it.

Adhir Chandra succeeds in getting Hasina’s husband, Joktar Ali, to deliver the newborn to the Rajarhat couple. Although Hasina and her son disagreed with this, Joktar forcibly handed the boy over to the Rajahat couple in exchange for 20,000 rupees.

Later, Hasina Begum repaid the Tk 10,000 loan with the money from the child’s sale. But he lost his temper and began to cry. By failing to protect his younger brother, his older brother Hasan also proudly left the house for his parents.

Hasan, the hotel worker, Hasina’s eldest son, said her father had beaten her with threats to fire her for not selling her brother. Mom is crying now. Unfortunately, I left home and stayed at the owner’s hotel. I could only bring my brother back if I got 20 lakhs. But there’s no money.

Hasina’s brother, Keramat Ali, said, “Even after 10 years of marriage, we have no children in our family.” I wanted to take my sister’s son. But the sister’s husband gave the child to someone else in exchange for money.

Hasina Begum said, poor people don’t get food. Neighbors gave impatient relatives. They will look good. He gave me 20 lakhs. Of that, yesterday I paid 10 lakhs (loan).

Rokhsanara Mukta, a teacher at a local school, said Hasina Begum had sold the newborn for 20,000 taka mainly due to the shortage. I have informed management about the matter. You wouldn’t have to sell your motherhood if you had financial support.
