Swedish police arrested a mother on suspicion of holding her son captive in an apartment for almost 30 years. The incident took place on the outskirts of the capital, Stockholm. However, the arrested mother denied having held her son captive and physically injured him.
The boy, who is said to have been in detention for some 30 years, is now 40 years old. He was found injured in a very dirty environment on the floor. The man’s mother fell ill and had to go to the hospital. Then on Sunday, a relative who accidentally went to the apartment saw the boy there. Now he is being treated in the hospital.
The flat in the Hannings area of Stockholm has now been sealed in the interest of a police investigation. Police are looking for evidence to find out what really happened there.
An unidentified relative and his companion went to the apartment Sunday night after hearing the news that the woman had fallen ill and went to the hospital. The relative said he last moved into the apartment 20 years ago. At that moment, he tried to warn everyone by expressing his concern for the boy.
When the boy was 11 or 12 years old, his name was removed from the school record and he was brought home. Last Sunday, the woman opened the door to the apartment and saw that it was completely dark, she was trapped in a dusty room and there was a foul smell of urine, dirt and garbage.
When he yelled hello, there was no response. Then he has to enter the house through the pile of things. Hearing the noise in the kitchen, he saw a man sitting in a dark corner. You could see him in the street light from outside. His legs were bruised.
The woman told a Swedish newspaper that when the man saw her, he stood up and called her by name. Most of the man’s teeth had fallen out and his words were vague.
Either way, she said, the man recognized her after so many years and wasn’t afraid to look at her. After the man was taken to hospital, doctors reported the matter to the police and his mother was later arrested.
A Stockholm government prosecutor said the man had to be operated on. However, he did not elaborate.
A police spokesman said: “We are investigating how long the man has been detained. But our guess is that he was held captive for a long time.”
The woman who found the man on the floor said in an interview with Sweden’s public television station that the man’s mother had previously lost another child. I was confused by that. After the second son was born, he named him after the previous son.
A relative was quoted there as saying that he wanted to get his dead son back and keep him very close.
The family member said he was thankful that the man was finally rescued and survived.
