The mayor of the municipality of Bera has been suspended for allegedly insulting the UN

The local government department suspended Pabna’s Bera Upazila Nirbahi (UN) officer for allegedly insulting the mayor of Bera municipality, Abdul Baten.

The instructions were given in a circular issued by the undersecretary of the Department of Local Government of the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives, Mohammad Faruk Hossain, on Tuesday.

UNO Asif Anam Siddique said he was assaulted at a public order meeting at the Upazila administration office on Monday.

UNO told The Daily Star yesterday that senior officials had been informed in writing.

He said: ‘In the morning, the mayor of Bera Upazila Nagarbari and Kazirhat Ghat. Abdul Baten made some proposals that were not legally acceptable. When I went to talk about it, the mayor attacked me and tried to kill me. Other officials present at the meeting tried to stop him.

Pabna Deputy Commissioner Kabir Mahmud said yesterday: “We have informed the highest levels of government about this. The next step will be taken according to the instructions of the Ministry of Public Administrations.

When contacted, Mayor Abdul Baten told The Daily Star that the allegations were false. He claimed that his confession had been obtained through torture and that his confession had been obtained through torture. There were no incidents of assault.
