Nair Kabir, the first mayor of Brahmanbaria municipality, has come under harsh criticism for naming a bridge. Since the removal of the beggars and the renaming of the bridge from ‘Fakirapul’ to ‘Puente Thana’, there has been a storm of criticism and condemnation everywhere. However, many have advised Mayor Nair Kabir to take the initiative to alleviate the suffering of citizens without worrying about minor issues like the name of the bridge.
It is known that beggars had been begging at the bridge over the city canal in the TA Road area of the city for a long time. As a result, the bridge became known to people as ‘Fakirpool’. However, beggar rehabilitation was taken to stop begging on the bridge. Therefore, on the occasion of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s birthday on September 26, the district administration, the municipality and the social services department handed out 25,000 taka in cash and 20 kg of rice to several beggars sitting in Fakirapul.
The day after giving cash and rice to the beggars, the municipal authorities hung a sign naming the bridge ‘Thana Bridge’. The Brahmanbaria Sadar Model Police Station building is located next to the bridge. As a result it has been given this name.
Meanwhile, the name of the bridge has been the subject of debate and criticism for several days. Protesting against the name of Thana Bridge, many have demanded that the bridge be renamed ‘Fakirapul’ or ‘Ghorapatti Pool’.
Bivardhan Roy, founder of a Facebook group called ‘Amrai Brahmanbaria’, wrote in a Facebook group demanding that the bridge be named ‘Ghorapatti Pool’, adding that our passion is involved in naming this traditional pool in the district city. We have chosen you to give us the dignity of our emotions and we have full confidence in you. This practice of renaming may encourage us to rename other places in the future. It is believed that this practice will create a sufficiently negative image.
Another person named Hasan Hashmi wrote: I know that one day the name of the city will also change. We all want a change. But if the father’s name is changed, it cannot be accepted.
Former BCL district leader Mehedi Hasan Lenin wrote on Facebook, the first female mayor in the history of Brahmanbaria municipality was historically appointed! Mr. Mayor, take the initiative to alleviate the sufferings of citizens by omitting the new name of these historic facilities.
Poet Joydul Hossain, president of Brahmanbaria Sahitya Akademi, said that horses used to come and stand near the bridge. That is why the area is known as Ghorapatti. Later, when a bridge was built there, everyone knew the bridge as a horse-drawn pool. Later it became known as Fakirapul because beggars used to sit on the bridge and beg. The name change could have been discussed with representatives of civil society. If the horse-drawn pool were given away, it would be in line with tradition.
When asked about this, the mayor of Brahmanbaria municipality, Nair Kabir, said: “People used to call the bridge Fakirapul because beggars used to sit and beg.” But the bridge had no name. Fakirapul was on the lips of the people.
He said that the beggars were being rehabilitated under the direction of the Prime Minister. Those who begged on the bridge received cash and food for a month. The bridge has been renamed for Farikapul.
