GNC driver Sajjad Hossain, 40, died in a shootout with police after he allegedly raped Champa Begum, a married woman from Kharulia in Cox’s Bazar, and left her in a moving car. Two home-made LGs, a few rounds of new ammunition, and used casings were recovered from the scene.
The incident took place around 3 a.m. on Tuesday in the Konakhali Maranghona area of Chakriya on the ABC Regional Highway. Three policemen, including Deputy Inspector (SI) Sheikh Abul Farooq, two officers Subal and Sumon, were shot dead by the gunmen. They have been admitted to the Upazila Health Complex.
Earlier Monday morning, locals arrested Sajjad Hossain, the main defendant in the Rape of Champa case, of Sheikh Killa Ghona in the Pekua Sadar Union and turned him over to Pekua police. He is the son of Abul Hossain from the area. Later it was turned over to the Chakaria police.
According to the police, a case has already been registered against the rapist Sajjad, who was killed in a shooting during the arms rescue operation, for various crimes including torture of women, terrorist activities, robbery and yaba trade.
Inspector from Chakaria Police Station (Investigation) AKM Safiqul Alam Chowdhury said the married girl, Champa Begum, arrived in Pekua from Chittagong on May 8 while arriving at Cox’s Bazar on the ABC regional highway. On his way to Chakriya from Pekua, he got into a CNG autorickshaw, took her hostage at gunpoint and took her to a secluded place in Maranghona, Konakhali, Chakriya. Two CNG drivers raped her one after another.
After that, the young Champa was killed when he was thrown from the moving car in front of another vehicle. The day after the incident, RAB arrested Joynal Abedin, an associate driver for Sajjad, the main suspect in the case. He is the son of Mohammad Ali of Mehernama Nandirpara in Pekua Sadar Union. Sajjad was arrested with the help of the locals based on the information provided by Joynal.
Police Inspector Shafiqul Alam further said that after the arrest, Sajjad admitted in preliminary police questioning that he had raped the girl Champa by holding her with a firearm to the head while raping her. When he went to rescue the weapon, the rapist shot Sajjad’s accomplices. The police also responded. For about 20 minutes, Sajjad’s armed accomplices withdrew at one stage of the exchange of fire on both sides.
The bullet-riddled bodies of the rapists, two homemade LGs, several rounds of new ammunition and used bullet casings were recovered from the scene. Later, Sajjad was taken to the Upazila Health Complex, where the doctor on duty declared him dead. The three wounded police officers were admitted to the Upazila Health Complex.
Chakaria police said OC. Habibur Rahman said: ‘A shootout with the police occurred when the young Champa carried out an arms rescue operation with Sajjad, the main defendant in the rape and murder case. The body of the rapist Sajjad, who was shot dead by his teammates, was sent to the Cox Bazar Sadar Hospital morgue for his autopsy. Three separate cases are presented on charges of murder, weapons and assault on the police.
