Professor of Linguistics and the country’s main surgeon. Mirza Mazharul Islam no longer exists (Innalillahi wa Inna Ilahi Raziun).
He died at the Bardem General Hospital in the capital at 9.15am on Sunday (October 11). He was 93 years old at the time of his death.
Dr. Mazharul suffered from various diseases due to old age. The veteran doctor and language activist was admitted to the Bardem ICU on September 30.
Mirza Mazharul Islam began his career at Dhaka Medical College in 1954 as an honorary intern surgeon. Later he also served as the director of the medical faculties of Mymensingh, Chittagong and Dhaka. He played a role in establishing Zahurul Islam Medical College as a consultant.
Dr. Mazharul has been the Senior Advisor to Bardem’s Department of Surgery since 1993. He was a two-time unpaid CEO of Bardem. He has been the president of the Bangladesh College of General Practitioners for 20 years. Until his death, he was Honorary Chief Consultant in the Department of Surgery at Bardem General Hospital. He has performed so many surgeries that it is a record in this subcontinent.
He was born on January 1, 1926 in the Agcharan village of Kalihati upazila in Tangail. He was active in the state language movement in 1952. He was a member of the first two Sangram Parishads of the language movement (1947-1948) and made special contributions to the planning and construction of the first Shaheed Minar (February 23, 1952).
The Dr. claimed to witness the “inner house” of the language movement. Mazharul. After the police attack on the students on February 21, 1952, he operated on several wounded linguists while working in the hospital. In 2016, this worthy person received the Ekushey Padak for his contribution to the language movement.
Janazah will be held today at Bardem General Hospital. Mazharul. He will be buried in the Mirpur Shaheed Buddhijibi Cemetery in the capital.
