A former Awami League leader and his followers have been accused of hitting and assaulting a livestock official for failing to supply goats from a government goat development farm in Sylhet. However, when the defendant called, one of them turned off the phone and the other hung up.
The incident took place around 2 p.m. Monday at the Livestock Divisional Office in the Tilagarh area of Sylhet city.
The defendant Ranjit Sarkar is a former youth and sports secretary of the Awami League of the Sylhet district and a former secretary of education for the Chhatra League of the Kanak Pal district.
Sylhet District Livestock Officer Kazi Ashraful Islam, who was injured in the attack, returned home from Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital with first aid.
According to eyewitness sources, a young man named Kanak Pal showed up as BCL leader at around 2 p.m. He met Aminul Islam. At that time, the young man pressured the deputy director to feed the goats from the goat development farm. Kanak Pal threatened to look at the officer if he expressed his inability to do so. When the Kazi Ashraful Islam District Livestock Officer and others protested such behavior, Kanak Pal reported to other BCL leaders and activists on his mobile phone. Later, the leader of the Awami League, Ranjit Sarkar, and the leaders and activists of the Chhatra League went to the office of the Livestock Divisional Officer and attacked him. The livestock officer of the Kazi Ashraful Islam district was beaten and assaulted at the time. He was later rescued and taken to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital.
According to the Sylhet Livestock Office, goats are raised on government goat development farms to help farmers. Goats for breeding are officially supplied to farmers at low prices. In this case, the farm must have four goats. There are some rules for buying goats. The farmer will first submit a request to the Upazila Livestock Officer, then the requests will be submitted to the District Officer. Later, the departmental deputy director will approve them after verification and selection.
Kazi Ashraful Islam, the victim of the attack, told Prothom Alo: “A local boy, posing as the leader of the ruling party, came looking for a goat to eat.” When asked to submit an application in accordance with government policy at the time, he became angry and threatened to see the deputy director of the department. When I protested, the team called and hit me. My eyes and face are still swollen. “He said,” I came home in the afternoon after receiving hospital treatment at noon. “He said that legal measures would be taken in this regard.
Deputy Director of the Divisional Livestock Division. Aminul Islam told Prothom Alo: “At the urging of Awami League leader Ranjit Sarkar, BCL leaders and activists beat the cattle officer in front of him.” At this time, when we tried to stop him, he also used vulgar language along with threats. The matter has been reported to the higher authorities and the police administration, and the following steps will be taken according to the instructions of the higher authorities.
Sylhet Shahporan Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abdul Qayyum told Prothom Alo: “I have heard of disputes and clashes with livestock officers. Legal action will be taken if any complaint is made.
In this sense, if the mobile phone number used by Kanak Pal is called, it is blocked. And when Ranjit Sarkar’s mobile number was used, he hung up.
