A ship carrying the last consignment of goods for the construction of the Padma Bridge section left for Bangladesh from the Chinese port of Shinhoangdao. The first class Chinese ship MV Kong Xu Song left for Bangladesh on Thursday (May 14) around 5:30 pm Bangladesh time.

Padma Bridge Executive Engineer and Dewan Project Manager. Abdul Quader confirmed the news.

He said Cosco Shipping Line is in charge of transporting the last cargo to the bridge. When these goods arrive in Bangladesh, all the goods from the bridge will be taken to Bangladesh. The ship has several products made of 2,041 steel, including 160 bridge truss components. The ship will arrive at Chittagong port on June 7. It will arrive in the project area on June 15 via Mongla after paying customs duties and clearance at Chittagong port.

He added that work was underway to bring the products to Bangladesh in March. But due to the coronavirus outbreak in Wuhan, China, the production of Spanish products stopped completely in January and February. When the factory reopened in late April, component manufacturing work for the sections was completed.

Meanwhile, work on the main bridge has progressed 7 percent through April 30, river management work has progressed 61 percent, and overall project progress has been 69 percent.

Dewan Md. Abdul Quader said that after installing 29 sections, 4350 meters of the bridge have become visible. And there are only 12 sections left to place. Work has been completed on 294 piles and 42 pillars of the bridge. 41 spans are required for the bridge. Of these, 39 reached Mawa. Of these, 29 have been installed and welding, assembly and painting work is being carried out at Mawa Construction Yard during 10 sections.

He added that, generally, during the monsoon season, about two billion tons of silt come from the upper reaches of the Padma and close the channel excavated from Pier No. 18 to Pier No. 37 of the main bridge. The next two sections will be placed on Pier 25-26-26 this season as soon as possible to avoid dredging complications at the end of the Jazira Bridge during the upcoming dry season.

Incidentally, the construction of the Padma Bridge started in December 2014. The main bridge is being built by China Railway Major Bridge Engineering Group Company (MBEC), a Chinese contractor, and another Chinese company, Sino Hydro Corporation, is working on the management from the rivers.
