‘To keep the price of onion under control, this year the largest amount of onion will be imported, breaking the historical record. In addition, TCB will start selling onions on the open market at a fair price from the 13th.

A three-member delegation led by the Hungarian Foreign Minister met with the Trade Minister at his office in the Secretariat on Thursday (10 September). Trade Minister Tipu Munshi said this in front of reporters after the meeting.

The Minister of Commerce said that the price of onion has already risen both in our market and in the Indian market. However, several teams from the Ministry of Commerce will visit import sites such as Benapole and Healy. We will see what the status of the import is. Prices have risen a bit in the market.

The trade minister also said there were supply problems due to the floods. We work hard. TCB is shrinking on a large scale. The onions will begin to be sold on the open market at a fair price from the 13th. We will import the largest quantity of onions, breaking historical records.

Tipu Munshi said that India stopped exporting onions last year. But this time it didn’t stop. Our merchants here have taken advantage of the closure since last year. We have learned to import from new markets as a result of the closure of India.

Referring to the import of onions from alternative sources, Tipu Munshi said: “Our people have good communication this time, since the last time the onions came from Turkey, Egypt and Indonesia.” We have also tendered imports from Turkey through TCB. I have written to the relevant ministry to reduce the tax on the import of onions. Hopefully, the five percent tax will be withdrawn.
