Anisur Rahman Anis, the mastermind behind the demolition of the Bagha Jatin sculpture, the forerunner of the anti-British movement, has been expelled from the party.
Confirming his expulsion, Monwar Hossain, secretary of the Upazila Juba League office, said that Anisur Rahman Anis, president of the Kaya Union Juba League, had been expelled for participating in anti-state activities at an emergency meeting of the Kumarkhali Upazila League. Police arrested the Juba League leader and two of his associates on Friday night. Those arrested are Anisur Rahman Anis, 35, son of Mohiuddin from Raydanga village, president of the Kaya Union Juba League of Kumarkhali upazila, Hridoy Ahmed, 20, son of Shahabuddin from his village of Kaya and Sabuj Hossain cadres, 20, son of Nazim Uddin from the Chheuria Mandalpara area of the same upazila.
Police initially confirmed that the sculpture was vandalized due to a personal dispute between the Kaya College board of directors and the university principal.
The three detained defendants appeared before the Kushtia Judicial Court of First Instance at around 3pm on Saturday and were placed in pre-trial detention.
Kumarkhali OC Police Station (Investigation) Rakibul Hasan, who is investigating the case, said the defendants were brought to court at 4.30pm on Saturday and held in pre-trial detention for seven days. However, the matter has yet to be heard in court.
Around 12:30 pm Thursday, some criminals vandalized the sculpture of Bagha Jatin, a pioneer of the Indian independence movement, at Kaya College in the Kaya village of Kumarkhali upazila in Kushtia.
The demolition of the Bagha Jatin sculpture in Kushtia caused a stir across the country. People of different classes and professions condemned and protested. Faced with this situation, the police went out to the field to catch the criminals.
Anisur Rahman Anis, president of the Kaya Union Juba League, who was the mastermind of the incident, was arrested on the basis of secret information on Friday morning. Subsequently, the police arrested Hridoy Ahmed and Sabuj Hossain, two others involved in the incident. Police have confirmed that another person named Bachchu is involved in the incident.
Kushtia Police Superintendent SM Tanvir Arafat said they had discovered during preliminary questioning of the detainees that the sculpture of the revolutionary Bagha Jatin had been smashed due to a dispute with the university’s administrative committee.
He said it was being investigated if someone else was behind it. If the accused are sent to preventive detention and interrogated, it will be possible to know the whole incident.
The police superintendent said a man named Bachchu involved in the incident is still at large. An operation is underway to arrest him. Meanwhile, the National Socialist Party (NSP) organized a human chain in Kushtia on Saturday to protest the incident.
