A court sent Abdur Rahman, head of the Godagari Government College in Rajshahi, to jail for a corruption case. Rajshahi session and district judge Mir Shafiqul Islam ordered him to be sent to jail on Monday afternoon.
Last year, Godagari Government College Deputy Principal Umrul Haque brought a case against Principal Abdur Rahman. The court took notice of the case and ordered the Rajshahi District Office of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) to investigate.
Alamgir Hossain, deputy director of the ACC’s integrated district office, investigated the case. In the investigation report, it was learned that Principal Abdur Rahman has embezzled 72 lakh 42,630 rupees from the university.
Other accusations against Principal Abdur Rahman, his brother-in-law Selim Hasan, while working at another public elementary school, kept him employed at Godagari College. He is also accused of accepting a Tk 9 lakh bribe from a professor for the appointment of Tareq Aziz, a professor in the department of psychology, and Tk 6 lakh of Monirul Islam, a professor in the Bangladesh department.
Jahangir Alam, deputy director of the ACC’s integrated district office in Rajshahi, said that the ACC had previously filed a charge sheet against director Abdur Rahman in a corruption case, but that he was a fugitive. He appeared in court on Monday, the day of the hearing, and requested bail through an attorney. However, the court rejected the request and sent him to jail.
