The hanging body of a young cricketer named Sajibul Islam Sajib, who was playing for the Bangladesh Youth Team, has been recovered from his home. The incident took place in Amgachhi village in Durgapur, Rajshahi.
Durgapur OC Hasmat Ali Police Station said the hanging body of 23-year-old Sajib was removed from the roof of the house around 12:15 pm today (Sunday).
Speaking to Sajib’s family, the police officer said that based on the preliminary investigation, they thought he had committed suicide out of frustration with his career: “It looks like suicide. He can do it for the pain of not having a shot at the Bangabandhu T20 Cup.
The OC said the right-handed hitter was mentally broken as he didn’t stand a chance in the five-team T20 Cup as of Nov. 24. However, he was not on the preliminary list of 156 players for this tournament. Out of 158 players, 60 cricketers had a shot on five teams through the player draft.
After Esha’s prayers on Saturday night, Sajib fell asleep without dinner. The OC said he did not speak normally with family members, adding that his father had called him for dinner. Then he told me to eat later.
At 10 a.m. the next day, his father saw that Sajib was not responding to his repeated calls. Later, he dug a hole in the back of the room and saw Sajib hanging. Then they called the police.
Sajib started playing cricket in 2008 for the Bangla Court Cricket Academy in Rajshahi. He went on to play on U-13 and U-17 district and division teams. After that, Dhaka also played in the First Division and Premier League.
In 2016, this young man played in the Asian Cup with the Bangladesh U19 team. Sajib played for Old DOHS in 2016 and Dhaka Premier League for Shinepukur in 2019.
