One person died in a confrontation between the bride and groom in Barisal for giving less meat in the food.

The incident took place in Dakshin Rafiadi village in the 8th district of the Chandpasha union in Babuganj upazila on Tuesday afternoon. Nihad Azhar Mir (65) is the groom’s uncle.

According to locals, Runa Begum, daughter of Abul Kalam Hawladar from Barisal, married Sajib Mir, son of Motahar Mir from Dakshin Rafiadi village a few days ago. Two days ago, Runa was taken from her father’s house to her father-in-law’s house and a Bauvat ceremony was organized on Tuesday. 48 family members from the bride’s house participated in the ceremony. Relatives of the two parties first argued about giving less meat at one stage of the meal. Then there were clashes and chases between the two groups.

Chandpasha Union Parishad President Anisur Rahman Sabuj Khan said that locals had detained 10 people at the scene.

“We are on the spot,” said Zahid bin Alam, officer in charge of the Barisal Metropolitan Airport Police. At one stage in the fight between the two sides, the groom’s uncle was beaten with a stick and died on the spot. However, it is not possible to say who caused this incident without investigating.

So far no arrests have been made, he said. Preparations are under way to retrieve the body and send it to the Barisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital for autopsy. No case has yet been filed.
