Dhaka: Tithi Sarkar, an expelled student from Jagannath University accused of insulting Islam and Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), has been detained for one day in a case under the Digital Security Law.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ziaur Rahman issued the order on Thursday (November 12).

Tithi’s husband Shiplu Mallick’s pretrial detention has been denied and he has been sent to jail in a case brought to the Paltan police station.

The two defendants appeared in court on the same day and were held in pre-trial detention for three days. Tithi and her husband Kishore Monir requested bail seeking the cancellation of her husband’s pre-trial detention.

After hearing from both parties, the court denied the one-day remand and ordered Shiplu to be sent to jail.
Earlier on Wednesday (November 11), Tithi Sarkar and her husband Shiplu Mallick were arrested in the Kaptanbazar area of the capital at around 4.15 p.m. the same day at the home of a close relative of her husband in Panchdona, Madhabadi, Narsingdi.

On October 31, the cyber monitoring team of the Police Criminal Investigation Department (CID) found a post on social media that said Tithi Sarkar had been rescued from the fourth floor of the CID Malibagh office. The post caused quite a stir. In fact, no such incident has occurred at CID. Niranjan Baral, a rumor monger, was arrested in the Banasree area of Rampura. Then on November 2, a case was brought against Niranjan and some other unidentified persons under the Digital Security Law at the Paltan Police Station. Niranjan Baral is currently in prison after his pre-trial detention.

Tithi Sarkar was the office secretary for the JOB branch of the Bangladesh Student Rights Council, which was formed during the quota reform movement. He has been suspended from the organization on charges of blasphemy. Tithi Sarkar was also expelled from Jagannath University on October 26 for the same charge.

However, his sister Smriti Sarkar filed a general diary (GD) at the Pallabi police station on October 26, claiming that Tithi Sarkar had not been available for several days. He told the media that on October 23, Tithi himself filed a GD at the Pallabi police station claiming that his Facebook ID had been hacked. After GD, the police told him to go to the police station. He went to the police station on October 25 and did not return. Police say Tithi did not even go to the Pallabi police station.

He’s been missing for 15 days since October 25. The CID says that Tithi herself organized the drama of the disappeared.
