The funeral of Burhan Uddin Muzakkir, a journalist who was shot dead by supporters of Basurhat Township Mayor Abdul Quader Mirza, and former Upazila President Mizanur Rahman Badal, in Noakhali’s Kompaniganj Upazila, has been completed.

Previously, his janaza was held at 9:30 pm Sunday at Azgar Ali Dakhil Madrasa’s home ground in Charfakira Union of the upazila. Later he was buried in the family cemetery.

Earlier, thousands of people from different walks of life, including locals, came to see the journalist Muzakkir and participate in the janaza.

Companiganj Police Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mir Jahedul Haque Rony said law enforcement agencies, including the police, were on high alert to ensure that the janaza and burial went smoothly.

Muzakkir was shot and killed in a clash between Quader Mirza and the Badal group at Chaprashirhat Bazar in Charfakira Union of Companiganj around 10:30 pm on Saturday. He died while receiving treatment in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMC).

The deceased was identified as Burhan Uddin Muzakki, son of Nawab Ali Master from Charfakira Union District 5 and a Companyganj correspondent for the Daily Bangladesh Samachar.

Earlier, a clash between Quader Mirza and the group of former upazila Badal president took place in front of Chaprashirhat Bazar in the Charfakira junction of upazila around 5pm on Friday. At that time, journalist Muzakki was shot while covering the clashes. He was first rescued and taken to the 250-bed Noakhali General Hospital, from where he was transferred to DMCH for better treatment. He later died in the hospital ICU.
