She was the first female army officer to be appointed captain of a field ambulance. Nazma Begum was the first female contingent commander in United Nations history to twice command a level 2 hospital at the United Nations and twice served as a senior in the mission area.

In addition, he commanded two medical squadrons (BAF Zahur Base and Bashar Base) while in the Bangladesh Air Force.

Nazma Begum received testimonies from the Force Commander, SRSG, Chief of Staff of the Army of the Central African Republic and Minister of Defense for UN peacekeeping missions. He was nominated for the ‘Military Gender Advocate’ award in 2016 and 2019.
