The ship, which was unloaded at a private jetty on Tuesday, was carrying raw materials from Japanese steel company BSRM Group. Once unloaded, nine ships were anchored in the port.
When asked, Tapan Sengupta, deputy general manager of BSRM Group, told Prothom Alo: “This is a very good decision from the port. Due to the lack of a jetty, we had to wait a long time at the outer jetty. This step will reduce clutter even a little bit. Using this jetty will cost a little more to take the goods to the factory by detour than to the port. Even then, the lack of raw materials will not interrupt production at the factory.
The port has been using the Chittagong Dry Dock, a naval ship repair company, for several years due to congestion. Additionally, specialized docks from various other government agencies were occasionally used in isolation based on demand from importers.
Rear Admiral M Shahjahan, president of the port, recently told Prothom Alo that the initiative was taken so that the ship would not have to wait at the outer anchorage despite increasing pressure to import goods. All specialized docks of governmental and non-governmental organizations are being used in phases.
