The Matarbari deep water port will be built using this canal in Matarbari in Maheshkhali upazila of Cox’s Bazar.

After 10:15 pm on Wednesday, the Panamanian-flagged ship ‘Venus Triumph’ sank at the jetty built for the Matarbari power station, said the assistant captain of the Chittagong port authority, captain of the port. Ataul Hakim Siddiqui reported.

He told bdnews24.com that on January 5, another ship would use the canal to bring in construction materials for the coal-fired power plant.

The length of the Venus Triumph from Indonesia to Matarbari is 120 meters and the draft (underwater part of the ship) is 5.3 meters.

The length of the canal from the Bay of Bengal to the Matarbari coal-fired power station is about 14 km.

After reaching the deep sea of Matarbari as it is in the waters of the Chittagong port, the pilots from the Chittagong port brought the ship to the pier of the power station via the canal.

The port secretary, Omar Farooq, told bdnews24.com that this was the first cargo ship in the Matarbari canal.

The construction cost of the deep water port in Matarbari has been estimated at Tk 18,006 crore. Japan is lending Tk 12,792.06 crore for this project.

Of the remaining amount, the government is giving Tk 2,061.15 crore, while the Chittagong Port Authority is giving Tk 2,213.24 crore.

The project initiated by the Ministry of Maritime Transport is being jointly implemented by the Chittagong Port Authority and the Department of Roads and Highways. All his designs are being supervised by Japanese experts.

Port officials hope to dock at the Matarbari deepwater port by 2028.

Within the framework of this project, two terminals of 300 and 460 meters in length will be built in the deepwater port with a connecting road. This will facilitate the transport of goods directly from large ships.

Initially, there will be a container terminal in Matarbari and a multipurpose loading and unloading terminal. With the increase in freight transport by sea, the activities of this port will also increase continuously.

On September 23, an agreement was signed with Nippon Koe, a Japanese company, as a consultant for the construction of the seaport.

This Matarbari project area is 40 nautical miles from the port of Chittagong. Currently, ships with a width of 180 meters and a draft of nine and a half meters can navigate through the channel of Chittagong port.

The Matarbari Canal, which is 14.5 km long, 250 m wide and 18 m deep (draft), can be used to transport 8 to 10,000 container ships in the port. Ordinary cargo ships with a capacity of 60,000 metric tons will also be crowded there.
