In Myanmar’s Rakhine state, Aung San Suu Kyi’s party, the NLD, lost to Rakhine’s party, the National Arakan Party (ANP). In Rakhine, more than half of the seats were canceled, leaving 28 in the state on Sunday.

The NLD won in other parts of Myanmar but lost in Rakhine.

The state has been fighting the Arkan army for the past few years with the Myanmar army. The Electoral Commission of the Union of Myanmar (UEC) canceled the elections in nine northern cities for fear of the Arkan Army.

South Rakhine and its capital, Sittwe, also had limited voting. Out of 1.7 million voters here, only 25 percent were able to cast their vote.

According to preliminary results, Rakhine State Prime Minister UNP Pu was re-elected from Gawa’s 2nd Constituency on Sunday. However, the NLD lost seats in the towns of Tang, Ramari and Manang in Rakhine, which in 2015 were known as the ruling base of the NLD.

Dao Hla The So, re-elected as a member of Parliament for the Tangup constituency, won with 5,150 votes. His rival, the NLD candidate, defeated Dao Ni Ni May Maint by just 600 votes. Elections were not held in all areas of this constituency. Because most of their rural areas were off the electoral list this time.

Tangup’s incumbent deputy Dao Ni Ni Mint is one of three NLD candidates who disappeared during the campaign last month at the hands of the Arakan Army. His last condition is still unknown.

At least 15 ANP candidates have won seats in the upper house, lower house and state parliament in the areas of Tangup, Ramri and Manaung, including Sittwe, in the south and the capital of Rakhine.
