A terrible fire broke out at the Konka Electronics factory in the Trivardi area of Sonargaon upazila in Narayanganj. The fire broke out on the second floor of the main factory building to make refrigerators around 10:15 p.m. Sunday.
Narayanganj got the news, The fire was brought under control after four and a half hours of 12-unit efforts in Dhaka and Munshiganj.
About 5 to 6 thousand refrigerators in the burning factory, Initially it was learned that valuable parts were burned, including raw materials.
Meanwhile, fire service officials said they did not know if they had a fire safety plan even though the factory had been operating for about two years. They couldn’t even say if the fire service had the approval. However, fire service officials admitted that the fire suppression system in this huge electronics factory was useless. As a result, the fire service had to speed up the collection of water from the canals outside the factory.
Eyewitnesses and factory workers said:, Apart from Konka, the factory used to make AC (air conditioners) and Mico and Gree strip coolers. The ground floor of the building where the fire started had reserves of flammable chemicals that are used in refrigerators and air conditioning. On the second and third floors there were several thousand refrigerators and granular plastic raw materials (resins).
According to the workers, between 200 and 250 workers work here. After heading to work in the morning, many people go out for breakfast around 10:30. As a result, there were no casualties in the fire.
Speaking with some witness workers at the factory, it emerged that welding work on the second floor of the building had been going on for several days. During welding work there on Sunday morning, sparks of fire fell on the stored plastic raw material (granules). When the smoke started to rise at that moment, the workers thought they had put it out right away, but after a while hundreds of plastic barn sacks caught fire. Due to the rapid combustion and the fact that most of the surrounding products are made of plastic, the flames of the fire immediately engulfed the entire factory. When it catches fire, it spreads rapidly and flames from the fire rise at least 40 to 50 feet. Spirals of smoke were also seen a few kilometers away. Meanwhile, the fire caused a long traffic jam on the Dhaka-Chittagong highway.
Abdullah Al Arefin, deputy director of the fire service in Narayanganj, said: “After receiving the news, we immediately started work at the site.” As the main gate of the factory was under construction, we had to gain speed to enter.
Atiqul Islam, an official from Sonargaon Upazila Nirbahi (UN), said firefighters were able to control the fire after a four-and-a-half-hour effort at around 2.30 pm However, black smoke billowed out of the burning rooms into the night. However, no workers were injured in the incident.
Debashish Barman, deputy director of the Dhaka fire service, said the section for making hidden electronics was three stories high. In addition to the large number of coolers made here, there was a lot of fuel screen. Initially, as far as we know, the fire started with the welding spark.
He said,, No water was found in the water line that was here. So I had to find water from outside. However, it is not possible to determine the extent of the damage if the fire is not completely extinguished. The cause and damage of the fire will be determined by a department committee.
