Sylhet: The expatriate family that escaped the institutional quarantine has been fined. Of the 9 family members, except for 3 children, the remaining 6 members were fined.
On Sunday (March 21) evening, the Sylhet District Assistant Commissioner for Administration and Executive Magistrate. Mezbah Uddin fined 6 members of the expatriate family 6,000 taka and sentenced them to 3 days in prison without any work. As there were 3 other children, they were not included in the fine.
At some point on Sunday (March 21), the expatriate family was staying at Zakiganj in Sylhet, their hometown, after fleeing the hotel, evading the hotel authorities and the police. The hustle and bustle started from noon, as 9 expatriates from the family could not be found in the hotel quarantine. Due to this, a question arose about the vigilance of the hotel authorities and the police in charge of security.
After contacting them on the mobile phone number listed in the hotel’s registration book, the expatriates said that they had gone to the village of Zakiganj in Sylhet. However, he assured the hotel authorities that he would return to the hotel after seeing a sick relative. They later returned to the hotel around 8 pm and were sentenced by a mobile court. However, no action has been taken against hotel authorities and police personnel on duty for negligence of duty.
On March 17 (Thursday) at 10am, 152 expats from the UK arrived at Sylhet Osmani International Airport on a flight BG-202. After health checks and all kinds of paperwork, 146 people were sent from the airport to designated residential hotels in the city by bus for a 7-day institutional quarantine under the supervision of the army and the police according to the instructions of the government. Of these, 35 expats were accommodated at the Britannia Hotel in the city’s Amber Khana.
In this regard, the deputy commissioner (Media) of the Sylhet Metropolitan Police, BM Ashraf Ullah Taher, said that measures are being taken after investigating the negligence of the hotel and police authorities in the escape of expatriates from the quarantine.
Expats returning from the UK must remain in institutional quarantine in hotels to prevent new types of coronavirus infection, authorities said. It is forbidden to leave the hotel while it is in quarantine, it is forbidden to meet anyone outside, even inside the hotel. Disobeying the ban, nine members of a UK expatriate family left the hotel on Sunday without informing anyone.
