An elephant came to collect the money and died. The incident took place around 6 a.m. Thursday in the Ratankandi Union border market area in Sadar upazila of Sirajganj.
Sohail Hossain, the elephant mahout, said he came to the border market on Wednesday to collect money for the Naogaon elephant after a month of treatment. The elephant got sicker after coming here. Talking to the owner, it was decided to spend the night here. But in the middle of the night the elephant got sicker. The elephant died around 6 this morning.
Mahut Sohel Hossain said that the elephant’s owner, Abdul Jalil Sarkar, lives in Sylhet. He has five more elephants. The owner has been informed of the death of the elephant. When you come here, a decision will be made about what will happen to the dead elephant.
Mamun Biswas, president of The Bird Safety House, an environmental group, told Prothom Alo in the morning that the mahout stayed in touch until midnight after hearing the news of the elephant disease. They received the news of the elephant’s death in the morning.
Rajshahi Wildlife Management and Nature Conservation Officer Jahangir Kabir said the cause of the privately owned elephant’s death would be investigated.
