Two months after the gang rape incident of a housewife in the dormitory of Murarichand College (MC) in Sylhet, the defendant’s DNA report has reached the investigating officer of the case. His participation coincided with the DNA report. However, it is not yet known how many of the DNA samples from the eight defendants were involved in the test.
The additional deputy commissioner (media) of the Sylhet Metropolitan Police, BM Ashraf Ullah Taher, confirmed the information at 10:15 pm on Sunday (November 29).
He said that the DNA report had reached Indranil Bhatracharya, an inspector and investigating officer from the Shahparan (Rah.) Police Station. The charge sheet will be filed in court very soon.
Ashraf Ullah Taher said that even though two months have passed since the incident, it was not possible to issue a charge sheet as the DNA report was not received. The charge sheet will be issued as soon as the DNA report is received and the details will be communicated to everyone.
Previously, DNA samples were collected from six people arrested in the case on October 1 and October 3. After collecting the DNA lab at the Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital OCC Center, it was sent to the Dhaka lab. From there, the sample test report reaches the court first. The report subsequently reached the investigating officer on Sunday.
On September 25, around 8:15 pm, some BCL leaders and activists gang-raped a housewife in a private car on the street inside the dormitory of Sylhet MC College. The accused activists are said to be supporters of lawyer Ranjit Sarkar, former secretary for sports and youth affairs for the Awami League of Sylhet district.
That same night, the victim’s husband filed a case with the Shahparan (Rah.) Police Station, accusing 6 people of the incident. In this case, 2-3 more people were charged unknown.
In the context of the case, RAB and Range police arrested a total of 7 people, including 7 people who had declared the case. Those arrested are: Tarekul Islam Tareq (26), son of Rafiqul Islam from Umednagar in Sunamganj Sadar Upazila, and Md. Bagunipara from Habiganj Sadar. Shah, the son of Jahangir Miah. Mahbubur Rahman Rony, 25, Arjun Laskar, 25, son of Kanu Laskar from Atgram in Zakiganj, Rabiul Islam, 25, resident of Barangadipur (Jagdal) village in Dirai upazila and president of the branch of Muktijuddha Mancha MC College and Mahfuzur Rahman Masum, 25, village of Kanaighati.
Misbah-ur-Rahman Rajan and Ainuddin were also detained as suspects. Subsequently, the police sent all the detainees for 5 days. When they were presented to the court at the end of their preventive detention, they all made confessional statements. They are currently in jail. They are all involved in the politics of the Chhatra League.
According to a source close to the investigation, the investigation committee formed under the direction of the Superior Court held a public hearing on the incident from October 4-8 in the courtroom of the District Court and Sessions in Sylhet. Later, the committee members visited the MC College dormitory on site. On October 16, an 18-page investigative report was submitted to the Superior Court Chamber, which records the statements of the witnesses, including the site inspection. The Superior Court bench accepted the report after the hearing.
Meanwhile, after the gang rape incident, university authorities formed an investigative committee on October 26. Although the investigation committee later presented the report, the college principal sealed the college committee’s report under the pretext of a judicial investigation.
In addition, the National University canceled the scholarships and certificates of four defendants involved in the gang rape of a housewife. They have also been permanently expelled from MC College. Those expelled are Saifur Rahman, Shah Mahbubur Rahman Rony, Mahfuzur Rahman Masum and Rabiul Hasan.
