Deputy Inspector General of Prisons (DIG Prison) Bazlur Rashid has been released on bail from the Dhaka Court of Special Judges in a case of illegal asset acquisition. The matter was reported this Sunday to the Superior Court by the lawyer of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
After the hearing, the High Court ordered the ACC to provide a copy of the court order regarding the bond. The ACC was also ordered to ask the Judicial Court to cancel the bail of the DIG inmate.
ACC lawyer Khurshid Alam Khan came to the attention of the High Court of Justice. A dual virtual bank comprised of Nazrul Islam Talukder and Judge Ahmed Sohail approved the order.
Deputy Attorney General AKM Amin Uddin Manik and Deputy Attorney General Mahjabin Rabbani Deepa represented the state at the hearing.
Judge Iqbal Hossain of Dhaka Special Judge Court 5 granted bail to DIG Bazlur Rashid prison on Thursday in a case of illegal acquisition of assets worth around 3.5 million Tk rupees. He was released from jail that afternoon.
Previously, on October 22, the same court had ordered the start of a formal trial in the case. At the same time, he set November 22 for testimony in this case.
Regarding the release on bail of DIG Bazlur Rashid prison, ACC lawyer Khurshid Alam Khan said that DIG Bazlur Rashid prison had been released on bail by concealing the documents of the High Court order . After bringing the matter to the attention of the High Court, the court asked the court in question to request the cancellation of the bond. He also ordered the court to provide the case order documents promptly. The court of first instance has set the hearing for November 22.
Deputy Attorney General AKM Amin Uddin told Manik Jugantar that DIG Bazlur Rashid Prison had requested bail in Corona High Court. After the hearing, the Superior Court rejected the request for bail. But he concealed the order from the High Court and requested bail in the lower court and the judge granted it. He was released the same day. The ACC brought the matter to the Superior Court on Sunday.
On October 20 last year, the ACC questioned Bazlur Rashid and his wife Razzakun Nahar on charges of illegal acquisition of assets. At the end of the questioning, the ACC director said. A team led by Yusuf arrested Bazlur Rashid. Later that day, the court sent him to jail.
Then, on August 26, the investigating officer of the case, the ACC deputy director. Nasir Uddin filed a charge sheet against DIG Prison Bazlur Rashid. On September 1, the Chief Special Judge for the Dhaka metropolitan area, KM Imrul Kayesh, ordered that the case be transferred to that court.
According to the charge sheet, Bazlur Rashid Rupayan purchased a 2,981 sq. Ft. Apartment from the development at 55/1 (old) 56/56 (new) under construction on Siddheswari Road in Dhaka. He also paid three crore and eight lakh rupees for the price of the apartment. Bazlur Rashid was unable to show any valid source of the money he paid for the purchase of this apartment.
Even Bazlur Rashid did not show any information about the purchase of the apartment on his income tax documents. Three crore and eight lakh rupees paid is inconsistent with the known source of income. A total of three crore 14 lakh 35,902 taka of illegal assets were brought against him under section 26 (1) of the ACC Act.
