Dhaka: The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs approved a proposal to convert the four-lane Dhaka-Joydebpur-Mymensingh highway into a 10-lane highway. It cost 3,353 million rupees.

A proposal in this regard was approved at a virtual meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs chaired by Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal on Wednesday (September 30). The meeting was attended by committee members, senior secretaries from cabinet departments and senior officials from the concerned ministries.

After the meeting, the Finance Minister told reporters that the Department of Roads and Highways approved the policy for the implementation of “Improvement of the Dhaka-Joydebpur-Mymensingh highway on the highway with service lane on both sides.” Caria Overseas and Development Corporation, a South Korean company, will execute the construction of the road on the basis of the Public Private Partnership (PPP). It was a four lane road and some more work will be done, including widening the road. The government and the Korean company will jointly carry out this work.

The finance minister further said that the initial cost for the job has been set at Tk 3,353 crore. The money will be paid in full by Korean companies. The government does not have to pay in this case. Because the government has now made the four-lane highway. The government will pay Tk 280 crore for rehabilitation and Tk 100 crore for the transfer of public services. The rest of Tk 3,353 crore will be borne by the Korean company.

It is worth mentioning that the existing 4.16 km Joydebpur-Mymensingh highway with four lanes is being upgraded to 10 lanes via the expressway. In addition to the existing four lanes, emergency lanes will be constructed with 10-foot-wide barriers on both sides. With which only ambulances, security vehicles, VIPs and any other emergency vehicle can circulate. After that, two separate lanes for low speed vehicles will be made with another 18 to 24 feet. There are plans to build five lanes on one side and ten lanes on the other. The underpass womb will be built every 2-3 km to enter and exit the expressway from other roads on both sides.
