The death of Allama Shafi, the future of Islam in custody?

For many, Allama Ahmad Shafi and ‘Hifazat-e-Islam’ are synonymous. The name ‘Hefazat-e-Islam’ became widely known after a demonstration in Dhaka’s Shapla Chattar in 2013.

Since then, Ahmad Shafi also became well known. The demonstration, which demanded the punishment of bloggers, shocked everyone.

The meeting in Shapla Chattar proudly showed how influential this Qawmi Madrasa-based group is in society and politics.

Hefazat-e-Islam leader Allama Ahmad Shafi, who is already known to people associated with Qawmi Madrasa, became widely known among the country’s largest population through a demonstration in Shapla Chattar in 2013.

Despite his age, there were no doubts or controversies about the presence of Ahmad Shafi in the custody of Hefazat-e-Islam.

Ahmed Shafi is known to millions of students and teachers at Qawmi Madrasa as ‘Murubbi’.

The death of Allama Shafi and the future of custody
Although Hefazat-e-Islam was formed in 2010, it was not a well-known organization.

Mufti Sakhawat Hossain of the Hefazat-e-Islam executive committee said it was originally a regional organization based in Chittagong.

The movement against bloggers increases the activities of Islam in the custody of the center. There are many people involved in this organization who are affiliated with various Islamist political parties. But Amir Ahmad Shafi had no political affiliation or identity.

Many believe that this is why Ahmed Shafi has increased acceptance.

Muhammad Yahya Akhtar, professor of political science at Chittagong University, believes that Hifazat-e-Islam will not face such a crisis even after Ahmed Shafi’s death. In this case, the importance of how united they can be, he said.

Professor Akhtar said: “The presence or absence of Mr. Ahmed Shafi is not a big problem here. It seems that Mr. Ahmed Shafi has not been active in decision-making in recent years due to his age.”

“Islam in custody will not be weak. The political parties will always have their importance. But whether it will be divided or united, that is the main question.”

Many feel that Ahmed Shafi’s influence has waned in recent years.

Hefazat-e-Islam has created various confusions and pros and cons with the ruling Awami League on the issue of making the most of it.

The fact that he was forced to leave Hathazari Madrasa the day before his death shows that Ahmad Shafi has lost his previous post.

Many blame Ahmed Shafi’s son, Anas Madani, for this situation.

There are reports that his son Anas Madani has gained interest by putting Nubj Ahmed Shafi in front of him in various ways over the past years.

Anas Madani has always denied this accusation.

Mufti Sakhawat Hossain, a member of the executive committee of Hifazat-e-Islam and a professor at Lalbagh Madrasa in Dhaka, said that non-political people would be in charge of Hifazat-e-Islam.

He thinks that the death of Ahmed Shafi will not create such a vacuum.

“I was not in the position Mr. Shafi was in before. I don’t think people will suffer in a vacuum if the person who will take over later can reflect the hopes and aspirations of the people,” Mufti Sakhawat said.

He said that Hifazat-e-Islam has a 229-member shura committee. The Shura Committee will decide who will be the next Amir. BBC
