Despite hundreds of attempts Monday to cast his vote, he was unable to reach the center from the hospital. So the EVM button was not touched. Many may have voted for him. However, he said goodbye to the electoral field without knowing how many votes he obtained. The mayoral candidate, who was attacked in the last moment of the vote, did not return to the country crying. Abul Khair Khan (60) was running as a BNP candidate in the municipal elections of Chalna de Khulna with the symbol of a wad of rice.
After such a moving departure of the BNP candidate, the Electoral Commission has temporarily postponed the announcement of the results of the elections for the position of mayor. The sudden death of his party’s candidate has cast a shadow of mourning among the BNP workers in general.
Abul Khair Khan died at Khulna Medical College Hospital at 3.50 pm yesterday. His crown was identified on December 3. He had been in treatment in the hospital’s corona unit since December 23. Abul Khair Dakop is the son of the late Ayaz Uddin from the village of Nalopara in the municipality of Chalna.
Mozaffar Hossain, joint coordinator of Dakop Upazila BNP in Khulna, said excitedly: “Khair’s brother is not just a party candidate, he is like my own older brother. I can’t forget this pain. Brother (Abul Khair) no longer chooses. He’s already sick. I thought I would go back. Today everything is over. ‘
Leaders and activists said that Abul Khair was admitted to the Gazi Medical College Hospital in Khulna after being infected with corona. He was unable to return to the area after the assignment of the symbol. Later, on December 23, when his condition deteriorated, he was admitted to the crown unit of Khulna Medical College Hospital. At that time, his wife, Professor Shilpi Ara Begum, was at his side. His only daughter Tasnim Khan is a student at Oishee Mugda College of Medicine.
According to party sources, he actively participated in BNP politics in 1986 through the Nationalist Youth Party. He has been General Secretary and Chairman of Dakop Upazila BNP since 1986. In addition, he held various positions in the party, including that of Vice Chairman of the Khulna District BNP. In 2004, the BNP leader served as administrator of the municipality of Chalna for 13 months.
Meanwhile, his main electoral agent, Abdul Mannan Khan, boycotted the polls in favor of the BNP candidate, Abul Khair Khan, at around 1:30 pm. Abdul Mannan Khan alleged that the people of the ruling party had obstructed and threatened his supporters to go to the polls. It has influenced the vote.
There were four candidates, including Abul Khair, for the post of mayor of Chalna Municipality in Dakop upazila. Others are Sanat Kumar Biswas of the Awami League, independent candidates Achintya Kumar Mandal and Gautam Kumar Roy.
M Mazaharul Islam, a returned election official, said that the announcement of the results of the post of mayor of the municipality of Chalna was temporarily postponed after the death of the BNP candidate. If the Electoral Commission decides on this, the next step will be taken.
