Cows usually give birth to one calf a year. But at the same time, scientists from the Bangladesh Livestock Research Institute have claimed success in the technology of giving birth to twin calves from a single cow. They hope to bring this technology called in vitro embryo production, or IVEP, to the field soon.
The organization’s senior scientific officer said. Gautam Kumar Dev said: ‘This technology is new in Bangladesh. After initial success, we are working to implement it on the ground. If successful, it will undoubtedly have a great impact on the country’s livestock resources.
The scientists hope that if the project of two good quality cow calves in Bangladesh is successful in the field, it will be possible to further improve the quality of life of cattle and people.
The researchers say the technology involves collecting eggs from cows that give more milk and bringing them to the laboratory. There the eggs are matured and fertilized. As a result, two embryos are transplanted into the cow from the midwife in the laboratory.
Dr Gautam Kumar Dev said: “Initially successful, we are now selecting good quality animals and will be collecting eggs from these live animals. We hope it will be successful on the ground and we can spread the word later. It will be possible to conceive many cows with the eggs of a healthy and good quality cow.
However, artificial insemination of livestock is not new in Bangladesh and there is a veterinarian in every upazila in the country to assist with these activities. But in this way it is possible to get a calf from a cow. The idea of a pair of calves came true a few years ago. After giving birth to a pair of calves from a single test cow for almost four years, the researchers now believe that it is possible to take her to the field. Source: BBC.
