Saudi Arabia, an influential country in the Middle East, is on the brink of extinction after seven decades of controversial ‘kafil’ or ‘kafala’ practices. Which will be effective in the first six months of next year. Approximately 10 million expatriate workers living in Saudi Arabia will benefit from this. After the abolition of this much criticized employment system, the Ministry of Labor will be the gatekeeper for expatriates, not just any individual. The abolition of undeclared “slavery” of employers sponsoring employment. Workers will enjoy freedom. You can work in the place you choose. Your income will also increase. They can be free of obstacles.

Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Labor and Human Resources announced on Tuesday that it would formally announce the abolition of the kafala and kafil system next week. The announcement will be implemented within the first six months of 2021. After the abolition of this practice, expatriates will go directly to the Ministry of Labor. As a result, the chances of expat money being wasted and illegal will drop to almost zero.

According to the British news agency Reuters, on May 14, 2016, the Saudi cabinet made the decision to abolish the kafala system. That will be implemented within the first six months of 2021. New types of contracts between employers and workers are being considered. Saudi Arabia has said it will abolish the controversial method of hiring foreign workers (kafala) with one person. However, no details have been released. In the Kafala system, if a sponsor or employer sponsors a foreign worker, that worker can go to Saudi Arabia and after going there, he has to work with that employer. In this case, all matters, including the employee’s job change, depend on the employer. Due to this system, which has been in place in Saudi Arabia for almost seven decades, foreign workers working there cannot enjoy any kind of freedom. They must follow the wishes of the employer. Which is like a kind of slavery.

According to Reuters, Saudi backers use this method to harass expatriates in various ways in violation of the law. If this is canceled, expats will be much more independent in their careers and will be able to choose whatever job they want. It will improve the contractual relationship between employers and expatriate workers. Saudi Arabia’s Human Resources Ministry has said it will abolish the practice of working outside of a specific mochachcha or local name in Saudi Arabia, or doing business on its behalf, in exchange for a Saudi citizen receiving a monthly dividend.

According to the Saudi Gazette, the country’s authorities are going to cancel the workers ‘kafalah or sponsorship system due to many years of controversy over the violation of workers’ rights. This system was introduced to hire foreign workers. Most of these workers are citizens of Bangladesh, India and Pakistan in South Asia. In this system, all responsibility for workers rests with Saudi recruiting officers. But in Saudi Arabia, workers have been accused of harassing their employers. In this system introduced in the 1950s, expatriate workers must follow the instructions of their employers and sponsors. You cannot even enter and leave Saudi Arabia without their permission. In a word, the employer controls the visa and the legal status of the workers. This system is prevalent not only in Saudi Arabia, but in all the Gulf countries.

According to the Middle East Monitor, domestic and construction workers face severe persecution. Workers regularly complain about lack of pay, low wages and physical beatings. The Saudi Gazette says that if the initiative is implemented, it will be one of the most important social reforms under the leadership of the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia, Mohammed bin Salman. Yuvraj’s Vision 2030 initiative aims to reduce the Saudi economy’s dependence on oil. The abolition of the kafala system in the Gulf countries has been debated for a long time. Meanwhile, Qatar has introduced some reforms to the system. Foreign workers working in the country can leave the country without the approval of the employer. The International Labor Organization (ILO) has told the media that if the system is scrapped, expatriate workers will be able to change employers and come and go as they please, and will have complete freedom of movement according to the terms of the contract of work.

Leaders of the Bangladesh Association of International Recruitment Agencies (BAIRA) and the Bangladesh Hajj Agency Association (HAB) are telling Ittefaq that the ‘kafala system’ or kafil system (hiring foreign workers under one person) will be deleted. This is great news for the millions of Bangladeshis who work there. This will free expatriates from the chains of Kafil’s exploitation and oppression. They can work or do business independently.

They said that expatriates have to face various problems in the kafala system. The expatriates were tortured. Millions of Bangladeshis are trapped in an uncertain life in Saudi Arabia due to this practice. Due to the kafala system, the kafil or employer exploits expatriates in various ways. There is no justice for these tortures.

The president of the Hub and leader of Baira, M Shahadat Hossain Taslim, said that expatriates have to face various problems due to the kafala system. They live in captivity of Saudi owners. They have no freedom. The kafils have to be hand puppets. The expatriates were tortured. Millions of Bangladeshis in Saudi Arabia are trapped in an uncertain life due to this practice. They are being exploited. If this gruesome practice is abolished, expatriates will be freed from Kafil’s multifaceted torture. Saudi expats are delighted with the news of the cancellation of the caravan.
