The statement made by 42 prominent citizens alleging serious misconduct and corruption against the Electoral Commission has sparked a lot of controversy in the political arena of Bangladesh. Claiming that there was a political motive behind such a statement, the ruling Awami League leaders said they would address the problem through political tactics. Opposition parties, on the other hand, welcomed the statement against the BNP Electoral Commission.
Two days ago, 42 prominent citizens made statements against the Electoral Commission and wrote a letter to the President demanding the formation of a Supreme Council of the Judiciary.
The accusations of not holding elections against the Electoral Commission are very old. Now 42 prominent citizens have filed corruption allegations, including financial wrongdoing, against the commission.
Some high-ranking Awami League leaders have accused the Election Commission of having ties to the BNP. Presidium member and party minister Dr. Abdur Razzak said that they had discussed the issue at the highest level of his party. They think that now all of a sudden this statement has been made for political purposes.

Dr. Razzak said that it was doubtful that all the signatories had signed the declaration knowing all the details. “Those who have made the statement have often been silent on many important issues of the nation. Shakti. But they said nothing about it. When Hifazat or fanatics are working to create instability in the country, a new element was brought in with this statement. There is a political motive behind this. “
On the other hand, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir thanked prominent citizens for the statement. He said: “We have been saying the words of 42 people for a long time. The Electoral Commission has been biased in everything, including the 2016 elections and subsequent local government elections. It can be said that the Electoral Commission has given proof of its absolute failure and incompetence. I’ve been saying this for years. “
Fakhrul said: “The leaders of the Awami League have denied the truth and are now judging everything from unilateral political thinking.”

However, the Election Commission is also looking at the politics behind the allegations of 42 prominent citizens, including Professor Sirajul Islam Chowdhury, Sultana Kamal and Badiul Alam Majumder. Retired Brigadier Shahadat Hossain Chowdhury, an electoral commissioner, said: “They have protested against the allegations published in one or two newspapers at different times.” But all those accusations have now come to the fore.
Questions about the Supreme Judicial Council
The big question for the leaders of the Awami League is the demand for the formation of the Supreme Judicial Council. In 2016, the power to remove judges was assumed by Parliament through the 16th amendment to the constitution. SK Sinha was the Chief Justice at the time. Under his leadership, the Appeals Division abolished that power in Parliament and returned it to the Supreme Judicial Council. The government review appeal against this is in the Appeals Division.
Leaders of the Awami League have said that as the matter is now pending, there is no Council of the Judiciary in the country and they believe that a new debate on this issue is being attempted.
Awami League leader Dr. Razzak said: “There was a lot of controversy over the Supreme Judicial Council three years ago. Now there is no such council in the country. Even then, a council has been formed to remove the Election Commission. There is a motive behind this, of course. “
However, Badiul Alam Majumder, one of the commenters, said: “We have demanded action against the President in accordance with the law. Investigative reports have been published in the media against the Election Commission on several occasions. Including an Election Commissioner has accused the Chief Elections Commissioner of corruption. ” “We have not investigated. These are our allegations. We have brought the allegations to the attention of the president. Allow him to organize an investigation. If he finds this to be true, allow him to take action. We have filed the application following the provisions of the constitution.”
The other two prominent citizens who signed the statement said they doubted any action would be taken on the basis of their request. But considering the seriousness of the accusation, they made this statement with the aim of making it public.
