The export-oriented closed garment factory will reopen weekly starting on Sunday. Production will continue in the same range and factories will increase production capacity later.
However, BGMEA and BKMEA, two associations of clothing owners, have advised member factories not to bring workers from everywhere. They have instructed to carry out limited production work with workers who live nearby.
BGMEA and BKMEA are known to have started working to start the factory after obtaining government permission. Today, Saturday, BKMEA ordered all its member factories to start the sample, weaving and dyeing section starting tomorrow, Sunday. For now, however, the organization has prohibited workers from returning to the industrial area from afar. On the other hand, BGMEA has taken the initiative to launch a limited factory step by step in the area. In the first phase, instructions have been given to open 198 factories in Dhaka on Sundays and Mondays. However, the organization suggests starting only the knitting, dyeing, and showing section until April 30, cutting May 2, and the swing (sewing) section starting May 3.
Meanwhile, BGMEA issued a general directive for member organizations on Friday. He said that in the first phase, only workers who live near the factory will be able to join the work. Workers cannot be brought to Dhaka from the village until further instructions are given. The organization also asked factory owners not to fire workers for humanitarian reasons.
When asked, BGMEA Vice President Arshad Jamal told Prothom Alo: “The factories in Dhaka will open on Sunday.” Factories in other areas will be operational in phases from April 26 to May 3. “We have instructed factories not to bring in workers from outside Dhaka during the shutdown,” he added. And before opening the factory, members must obtain approval from BGMEA and local administration. A guideline has been issued for all member factories to start the factory.
On the other hand, BKMEA Vice President Mohammad Hatem told Prothom Alo on Saturday afternoon: “We have instructed all member factories to start the sample, knitting and dyeing section starting tomorrow.” These sections require very few workers. As a result, social distance can be easily maintained. On the other hand, other sections, including the swing (sewing) may start after May 1 after understanding the situation. However, in the event of an emergency export purchase order, the factories in question will be able to comply with the required hygiene standards.
After extensive criticism, BGMEA and BKMEA decided to close the factory until April 14 following government instructions. Later, both organizations announced to close the factory until April 25 in coordination with the government.
