The base appears to be the Anderson Air Force base in the United States, located on the island of Guam in the Pacific.
The Chinese video was released amid growing regional tensions with the United States over Taiwan. The video was posted on the Weibo account of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army on Saturday.
This was the second day of China’s military exercises in the Taiwan Strait. China is conducting the exercise to express anger at the visit of a senior US official to Taiwan.
Guam has some important American military installations, including an air base. It is seen as an important center of American military power. These Guam facilities are important for responding to any conflict in the Asia-Pacific region.
The 2-minute, 15-second video of the Chinese Air Force attack drill shows dramatic H-6s flying over a base in the desert, like a trailer for a Hollywood movie.
Halfway there, a pilot pressed a button and fired a missile at one of the runways by the sea. The video is titled, “The God of War is attacking the H-8K.”
The fired missile landed on the runway. It is shown on a satellite image. The runway in the image looked exactly like Anderson’s base. In addition to showing images of a missile fired from a plane, the video also shows the ground shaking. And with this shaking, the music stopped.
Releasing the video, the Chinese Air Force wrote in a short statement: “We are the security guards of the homeland, we have the confidence and ability to protect the skies of the homeland.”
Neither the Chinese Defense Ministry nor the US Indo-Pacific Command immediately responded to the video.
Colin Koh, a researcher at the Singapore Institute of Defense and Strategic Studies, said the video was intended to show the growing power of China.
According to Colin, the video also warns the United States that, whether in Taiwan or the South China Sea, a regional conflict over anything could threaten a Chinese attack on a base like Guam.
