Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain has said that women are being tortured so much across the country that even the government feels ashamed. Even government ministers have said that while we are in power, we cannot shirk our responsibility. We are in the judiciary, we also want a fair trial.

He spoke at a rally in memory of the late Bangladesh Attorney General Mahbubey Alam in the auditorium of the Supreme Court Bar Association on Wednesday.

The Law Reporters Forum (LRF), an organization of reporters on law, justice, constitution and human rights, organized the rally.

Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain told reporters: “Since I became Chief Justice, the journalist brothers have started writing from the courtroom.” That is good. Constructive criticism has many benefits for me. I can identify where the noise is.

He added that the way the execution is being carried out, where the death penalty is maintained, if it is brought before the people, then the people will be relieved that they are not only being released, but also the criminals being hanged. The release and maintenance of the death penalty must be reported. Otherwise, people will have a negative impression on the court. And the Supreme Court is the last straw. It should be reported in such a way as to show that the court is working too.

Remembering the late Mahbubey Alam, the Chief Justice said: “People’s life is so fragile, how he (Mahbubey Alam) passed away, I still can’t believe his departure.” His most important point was that as many irregularities as there are in the judiciary should be eliminated. He told me that you (the Chief Justice) make the central presentation. Doing so will eliminate 50% of irregularities in court. I have repeatedly told the bar officials that if they come to Central Filing, 50 percent of the irregularities in the bar will disappear. But as the bar says, there will be no central file. We will choose the field according to our choice. That is our way of working.

Addressing the bar officials, Syed Mahmud Hossain said that Mahbubey Alam wanted Central Filing. We hope that you (bar officials) will soon fulfill your wish. And also personally I want the Supreme Court to have 50 percent irregularities if there is a central presentation. If we do not get to the root of the problem, all the irregularities that I will talk about will not disappear from the field. You must first get to the root. And if you hit the root, the irregularity will disappear. It won’t go away before that.

Additionally, the Chief Justice shared various memories of his life with Mahbubey Alam from 1982 until his death. He prayed for the forgiveness of the late Mahbubey Alam’s soul.

The Minister of Law, Anisul Haque, the Minister of Fisheries and Livestock, Sham Rezaul Karim, Judge Obaidul Hasan of the Appeals Division of the Supreme Court, the Minister of State for Aviation, the lawyer Mahbub Ali, Sumon Mahbub, Jr. Mahbubey Alam and others also spoke on the occasion.

The speakers shared various memories of the brilliant life of Mahbubey Alam. At the same time, he prayed to Allah for his heavenly destiny. In addition, several judges from the Supreme Court and the High Court Division, as well as high-level lawyers, including Mahbubey Alam’s daughter, Shishir Kona, were present at the occasion.
