Chief Elections Commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda has said that the by-elections in the Dhaka-5 and Naogaon-6 constituencies have been fair. He said: ‘There was no difficulty in the elections anywhere. We have no complaints.

The CEC was responding to a question from journalists at the elections building in Agargaon, the capital, just before the close of voting in the by-elections in those two districts on Saturday.

KM Nurul Huda said: ‘National elections are held throughout the country. Voters are less interested in this election. There is no possibility of changing government to become a member of parliament in this election. He will be elected for two or two and a half years, so there may not be much interest among the candidates or voters.

The CEC added: “In addition to the short term, there is a corona problem. That is why people are terrified. There is a situation where people do not want to go to the polls. The electoral trend is good.

Voting in the Dhaka-5 and Naogaon-6 constituencies began today at 9am and ended at 5pm. Voting by electronic voting machine (EVM) takes place in both electoral districts. Six candidates ran in the Dhaka-5 constituency and three in the Naogaon-6 constituency.

Despite adequate security measures, voter turnout was relatively low in these two by-elections. Officials in charge of the polls have been seen spending leisure time at the polls. Although the weather was good during the day, the long line known to voters to vote in the Dhaka-5 constituency was almost nowhere to be seen.

Officials at the Jatrabari Ideal School and College Center in the constituency said turnout was seven to eight percent. The image of the surrounding centers was almost the same. Although the Awami League candidates claimed the vote was fair, the BNP candidates have accused their agents of expelling them from polling stations and of harassing voters in various ways. The EC deployed the Bangladesh Border Guard (BGB) in the two-seat elections to maintain a just and peaceful environment. Motorcycles are prohibited in the constituency from midnight on Thursday to midnight on Saturday.

Dhaka-5 constituency voting information

Habibur Rahman Mollah, the ruling Awami League deputy, died on May 8, leaving the Dhaka-5 seat vacant. The number of voters in this constituency is three lakh six thousand 625 people; Of which one lakh 53 thousand 758 are men and one lakh 52 thousand 98 are women. In this constituency, voting was carried out in 621 polling places in 104 centers.
