Following the incident, bus service to Sherpur-Dhaka has been suspended since Wednesday afternoon following a decision by the District Bus and Minibus Owners Association and the Road Transport Workers’ Union for the safety of passengers and vehicles.
President of the District Minibus and Bus Owners Association. Chanuwar Hossain told Prothom Alo at 12pm Thursday that they had an online meeting with the leaders of the Transport Owners Association of Mymensingh and Gazipur about the overall situation. The decision to stop the bus service will remain in effect until legal action is taken against the rioters named as workers in the Nabinagar area.
Abul Kalam Azad, coordinator of Jan Udyog, a civic organization in Sherpur, told Prothom Alo that the only way to get to different parts of the country, including the capital Dhaka, is by bus. Therefore, passengers have suffered immensely due to the stoppage of bus services. Passengers now go to Dhaka via Mymensingh on CNG autorickshaws with extra fee and risking their lives. He called on transportation leaders to reverse the decision to stop bus services and sought the initiative of the administration to take the necessary measures. At the same time, he demanded the government to build a railway in Sherpur immediately to alleviate suffering permanently.
