The Bailey Bridge over the Langulia River at Basail Upazila on the Tangail-Basail Highway collapsed along with the truck. A helper trapped inside a truck loaded with sand was rescued with serious injuries.
The incident took place around 11 p.m. on Sunday. Two units of Basail and Tangail Fire Service carried out a rescue operation in the incident. Due to the collapse of the bridge, road communication from the district headquarters with Basail and Sakhipur upazilas has been cut off.
Police and locals said a truck loaded with sand was heading towards Basail from Tangail. On the way, the truck went up the Langulia Bailey Bridge, detaching part of the bridge. At that moment part of the truck fell into the river.
The truck driver was able to get off safely, but the assistant was trapped. Upon receiving the news, two units of Basail and Tangail Fire Service began the rescue operation. Fire service personnel were able to rescue the aide in critical condition overnight.
Basail Police Officer in Charge (CO) Harunur Rashid said additional police officers were deployed to deal with the curious crowd at the scene. Two units of the fire service in Tangail and Basail are working on the rescue operation. An aide who was seriously injured in the incident along with the damaged truck has been rescued. He is currently admitted to the Tangail General Hospital.
