In Savar, a girlfriend named Shanta Islam is on a hunger strike at her father-in-law’s house to demand his wife’s rights. Shanta Islam, daughter of Khalifa Para from Krishnanagar in Jhikargachha de Jessore has been on a hunger strike at the home for the past two days.

Shanta is known to have married on the basis of her identity on Facebook to Sagar, son of Nazrul Islam of Genda Secretary Road, Savar. But after two months, the husband and mother-in-law tried to beat Shanta and get her out of the house.

When Shanta went to the Savar Model Police Station to file a complaint, her father-in-law, mother-in-law and her husband locked the house and fled.

Shanta Islam said their love story developed within days of their friendship via Facebook sources. Premik Sagar visited Shanta’s home in Jhikargachha several times. Sagar said they have assets that include several long-distance buses and double-decker houses.

Even Shanta believes in it with a simple mind. Later, when they went to Sagar’s home in Savar, on the advice of their father Nazrul Islam, their marriage was consummated on September 16 at Kazi’s office in Narayanganj.

But now her husband and in-laws don’t want to accept her, she said. He has been beaten and injured several times. He has also been threatened with death if he does not leave the house.

Shanta Islam further said that her father-in-law Nazrul Islam made her a bad offer because she did not leave due to his threats.

Shanta claimed that when she left her father’s house, she brought valuable items including two lakh rupees in cash and gold ornaments worth approximately 3 lakh rupees. Sagar and his father left that house with that money.

Shanta’s idea is that her father-in-law has moved Sagar somewhere. Sagar last texted her 3 days ago saying her father had detained her.

Although Sagar and his father tried to contact Nazrul Islam on their mobile phones, they were unable to locate them.

When Shanta, who was on hunger strike, informed Savar Upazila Nirbahi’s officer about her demand, he assured her to send the police and sent the police to investigate.

A general diary has been kept in the Savar model police station in this regard and the girl has been recommended to go to court, said AFM Sayed, officer in charge of the station.
