Police recently recovered the body of an unidentified young man from Lake Hatirjheel in the capital. The identity of the body could not be determined even by collecting fingerprints, as various parts of the face, hands, fingers and body were deformed. Finally, the clueless police have revealed the secret of the murder. Four people implicated in the murder have been arrested.

Details of the reveal have been shared on DC-Tejgaon DMP’s Facebook page.

Police recovered the half-dead body of an unidentified young man at the Merul-Badda end of Hatirjheel Lake below the Hatirjheel Police Station around 8 am on October 12. His hands and feet were blocked by the rope. The whole body was wrapped in sheets, mosquito nets and polyethylene. The face, hands, fingers and various parts of the body were deformed. That is why his identity could not be identified even by fingerprint collection.

Hatirjheel police identified the deceased on the basis of a mobile phone number written on a piece of paper thrown in the lake water about 50 meters north of the place where the body floated and arrested the accused involved in the murder.

The deceased was identified as Azizul Islam Mehedi. Age 24 years. He was a master’s student in the Department of English at the International Islamic University, Chittagong (IIUC). The only child of an American expat father. Although Azizul Islam Mehedi was born in the Bauria village of Sandeep in the Chittagong district, he lived with his mother in the Feroz Shah area of Chittagong for several years. He wanted to go to Canada after finishing his studies. In addition to studying, Mehedi used to help her acquaintances process passports and visas.

A team from AC Ashiq Hasan, Hatirjheel OC Abdur Rashid Police Station, Inspector Mohiuddin, SI Ataul and ASI Tariqul Islam led by the Tejgaon Industrial Zone ADC Hafiz Al Farooq visited the Khilkhet area from 1:20 pm to 6 pm : 40 am. O Tamim arrested Alauddin from the metropolitan residential area below the Hatirjheel police station and Rahim from the Rampura area.

Detainees Ahsan, Alauddin and Rahim have made confessional statements in the wise court. The arrested Ahsan was born in Bauria de Sandeep village in Chittagong district. He was a childhood friend of the late Azizul Islam. Ahsan returned to Bangladesh in December 2019 from Malaysia for five years. In March this year, he joined The Grove restaurant in Gulshan-2 as Executive Chef with a monthly salary of Rs 75,000. However, Ahsan fell into a financial crisis when the restaurant in Corona was closed. He then asked Alauddin, a relative of his wife, another defendant involved in the murder, to loan him some money.

Although Alauddin was a driver by profession, he was involved in brokerage at the passport office and buying and selling old cars in the transportation group. Alauddin Ahsan was asked to carry out passport-related work (spelling correction of name, correction of date of birth, reduction of age) without borrowing money. The money that can be found in this job will be shared between the two.

Ahsan’s childhood friend Azizul Islam told Mehedi that he could solve any passport-related problems. Mehedi arrived at Ahsan in Dhaka on August 12 to correct the names and ages of three passports in Chittagong. When he informed Alauddin about the matter, he drove Ahsan and Mehdi to his home in the Mahanagar residential area in his car. In exchange for correcting the names and ages of the three passports in two weeks, Mehedi paid Alauddin Tk 160,000 and Ahsan Tk 100,000.

Alauddin used to correct the name and age of the passport by providing financial benefits to a high-ranking assistant who worked at the Agargaon Passport Office. Although the passport was given to the person at the passport office for three amendments, he was unable to do the job within the stipulated time. Mehdi pressured Ahsan and Alauddin for this. Ahsan and Alauddin then asked Mehdi for a week. Mehdi wants to return the passport and money to Alauddin and Ahsan as they did not change the passport even at this time.

Ahsan and Alauddin began wasting time without returning their passports and money. At one point, Mehedi informed the two that if they did not return their passports and money, they would go to Dhaka and complain at his office. Fearing losing their job, Ahsan and Alauddin conspired to assassinate Mehdi. As part of the plan, Ahsan and Alauddin asked Mehdi to go to Dhaka on October 10 to obtain a passport.

Mehedi arrived in Dhaka from Chittagong at 11:10 pm on the same day. According to the plot, Ahsan took Mehdi to his rented house in Uttarpara, Khilkhet. Mehedi received sleeping pills along with food. Ahsan confirmed the matter after killing Alauddin on his mobile phone.

Note that on October 6 Alauddin went to Sylhet for professional work. To stay out of suspicion, Alauddin asked Mehdi to go to Dhaka through Ahsan, who planned to kill Mehdi while he was out of Dhaka. The tenant of Ahsan’s room next door, Tamim (a colleague who works at ‘The Grove’ restaurant), suddenly walks into Ahsan’s room and learns of the murder. At Ahsan’s request, Tamim said that she would not tell anyone and that she would help Ahsan dispose of the body in a convenient place.

Alauddin Khilkhet sent a vehicle to Ahsan’s home in Uttarpara around 4 am to remove the body. When Ahsan and Tamim told the driver to get in the car and collect the merchandise themselves, the driver refused to accept it. Also, Ahsan got out of the car when the number of people increased after the Fajr prayers.

Leaving the body under the bed, Ahsan and Tamim went to The Grove restaurant on duty around 12 noon. After work, the two of them returned home together. Around one in the evening, driver Rahim Alauddin’s Noa minibus headed to Ahsan’s home in Khilkhet Uttarpara to dump the body.

Ahsan and Tamim collected Mehdi’s body wrapped in a bed, mosquito net, sheets and polyethylene in a minibus and asked the driver Rahim to go to Sayedabad. Tamim came down the road. Ahsan entered the Hatirjheel area with the body on a mike. At the Merul-Badda end of Hatirjheel Lake, the driver Rahim stopped the car and opened the door. Ahsan threw the body into the water from the car.

Three passports and a Mehedi bus ticket used to travel from Chittagong to Dhaka were confiscated from the detained defendants. In addition, the minibus that used Mehdi’s body to be dumped in Hatirjheel was also seized.

Tejgaon Division Deputy Police Commissioner Mohammad Harun Aur Rashid said: “This is a clueless murder. The killers distorted both the fingers and the face so that the identity of the corpse could not be identified by fingerprints. We were able to identify the body from a mobile number written on a piece of paper that is 50 meters from the place where the body was dumped, as well as arrest the four defendants involved in the murder and retrieve all the evidence. This case is proof of the excellence of the police investigation.
