Dhaka: Mamunul Haque, Deputy Secretary General of Hefazat-e-Islam and Acting Secretary General of Bangladesh, Khilafah Majlis, called the vandalism of the Bangabandhu sculpture in Kushtia sad.
He made the remarks in a statement on his Facebook page late Monday (December 8) regarding the “general situation arising from the dispute over the sculpture, including cases of sedition.”
He said that an unstable situation has been created in Kushtia by demolishing the Bangabandhu sculpture. It is undesirable, sad and reprehensible. Someone tries to imply my name with the breaking of the sculpture. But speaking in very unequivocal language, I did not say anything about taking the law into my own hands through any of my statements or words. A person who respects the law and order of the country can never do that.
“My statement is that from the Islamic point of view it is illegal and haram to have sculptures. I have informed the proper authorities and we have made it clear in our statement. If Allah ever gives us power at the state level then I will organize all the activities in the light of Shariah, InshaAllah. ‘
Regarding the case, Mamunul Haque said: “I have repeatedly said that in our statements they have laid the groundwork for sedition by distorting their own opinions and fabricated interpretations.” Academics across the country say that our statement is never against Bangabandhu, but that all Bangladeshis, all Bengalis respect and love the late Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the great leader of independence. As a Muslim, I pray for the forgiveness of his soul.
