After a long two-week wait, Ahmed Ali, the former mayor of Meherpur, is the candidate for the Gangni municipal elections. The former president of the UP, Asaduzzaman Bablu, has been nominated by the BNP.

According to sources from the Awami League, the district Awami League nominated a total of eight candidates in the Gangni municipal elections to compete for the position of mayor. They are District Awami League Agriculture Secretary Fazlul Haque, Gangni League Acting General Secretary Upazila Awami Golam Mostafa, former Mayor Ahmed Ali, Awami Municipal League Secretary General Anarul Islam, Vice President Nabir Uddin, Vice President Masum Billah, Juba League President Mosharraf Hossain, and former student leader Shahiduzzaman. .

Four people from the BNP have tried to fight for the position of mayor. They are Asaduzzaman Bablu, president of Saharbati Union Parishad (UP) and general secretary of Gangni upazila BNP, Maqbool Hossain, general secretary of municipal BNP and Insarul Haque, former acting mayor. Incumbent mayor Ashraful Islam has announced that he will be on the ground as an independent candidate.

Amirul Islam was elected first mayor after the establishment of Gangni municipality in 2001. He was killed in a terrorist attack after Ahmed Ali’s by-elections twice in a row and Md. Ashraful Islam was elected mayor.

The district election official Ahmed Ali said that the elections would be held in Gangni Township on January 18 through EVM. The total number of voters in this municipality is 20,356. Of these, 9,060 are men and 10,598 are women.
