The main suspect in the stabbing murder of three people, including two women, in a church in the French city of Nice on Thursday, is said to have left Tunis for France a few days ago.
According to the BBC, the police have not yet confirmed the name of the suspect, but French and Italian media have identified the attacker as ‘Brahim Asoui’.
According to police sources, the Italian Red Cross paper was recovered from the 21-year-old accused.
The paper was handed to him last month after he arrived on the Italian island of Lampedusa on an immigrant ship.
France’s chief counterterrorism prosecutor, Jean-François Ricard, told a news conference that the young man had repeatedly said “Allahu Akbar” during the attack. Shortly after, the police shot him.
He said he was taken to hospital with gunshot wounds.
According to him, the alleged attacker is a Tunisian citizen. He was born in 1999. He is believed to have reached the Italian island of Lampedusa by boat on September 20. Then from there he came to France.
Jean-François Ricard added that a copy of the Koran, two telephones and a 12-inch knife were recovered from the attacker.
“We also found a bag that belonged to the attacker,” he said. There were two knives next to the bag, but they were not used in the attack.
One of the victims of yesterday’s attack on a Notre Dame church in the city of Nice was nearly beheaded. The country’s president, Emanuel Mancho, called it an “Islamist terrorist attack.”
“If we are attacked again, it will be an attack on our values of freedom, an attack on our freedom of movement,” he said in a statement at the end of the visit. I want to make it clear again that we will not bow to any terrorism.
President Emmanuel Macho said the number of troops would be increased from 3,000 to 7,000 to protect public places such as churches and schools. He also said that the highest security alert in the country has been issued.
Earlier this month, a man of Chechen descent killed Samuel Patty, a school teacher in Paris, France, for showing a cartoon of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) in class. Then came the tensions in France.
