India and China met in a high-level meeting last Friday amid border tensions. Indian Defense Minister Rajnath Singh and Chinese Defense Minister Wei Feng met on the sidelines of a meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) in Moscow, Russia. Speculation abounded around the meeting of the two defense ministers. During the nearly two and a half hour meeting, they signaled a return to peace on the border, but the next day, Saturday, the two parties blamed each other for the border confrontation.
China blamed India for the disturbances on the Ladakh border and warned that it would not yield an inch of land. In a counter-statement, India said it was committed to maintaining the sovereignty and integrity of the country. Delhi is watching how quickly China withdraws its troops from Indian territory. Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump has offered to mediate to end the conflict between the two countries. He said that the border situation between India and China was very bad and that the United States would be happy to help restore peace between the two countries.
Tensions between China and India have been simmering on the Ladakh border since last May over accusations of counterinfiltration. The tension escalated on June 15. On the same day, 20 Indian soldiers were killed in a clash between the armies of the two countries in the Galwan Valley of Ladakh. China has also acknowledged the casualties of its troops, although it has not released figures. So many soldiers died in that conflict without the use of firearms. Both countries have deployed additional troops along the Royal Line of Control (LAC) since the conflict. Although the two countries have held several military talks since May, the first meeting between the two countries was held on Friday.
The defense ministers of the two countries went to Moscow to attend the SCO meeting. There they sat in a bilateral meeting to resolve the border dispute. A statement from the Indian Defense Ministry said: “Both sides have agreed that neither side will do anything to further complicate the situation or increase tensions in the border areas.” A tweet from the ministry said: “At the meeting, the Defense Minister made it clear that the Indian army is playing a responsible role in LAC. But there will be no compromise on the issue of the country’s sovereignty.
But China said in a statement yesterday morning: “The reason for the tension on the India-China border is clear. India is fully responsible for this.” At the same time, China has warned that China will not give an inch of its territory. The Chinese military is confident, capable and ready to defend the country’s sovereignty and borders. ”The statement further said:“ Let India implement what was discussed between Chinese President Xi Jinping and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. “Let this problem be solved through discussion. The two countries should improve their relations. No one should take that step if relations between the two countries deteriorate. The two countries should take the initiative to improve stability, peace and the general state of the border ‘.
A statement by the Indian Defense Ministry said: “China’s response to massive military mobilization, aggression and destabilization is a complete violation of the terms of the bilateral agreement.” The statement added that India was also committed to safeguarding the sovereignty and integrity of the country. Delhi is watching how quickly China withdraws its troops from Indian territory. The most important thing now is to continue the dialogue between the two countries at the diplomatic and military level for the general withdrawal of troops to restore peace and stability in the Royal Line of Control (LAC) as soon as possible. The current situation must be handled responsibly. Neither party should take measures that could generate tension at the border. Source: AFP, Anandabazar.
