An 80-year-old man married a 12-year-old schoolgirl through a notary public in Sadarpur, Faridpur. Upon receiving the news, the mobile court arrested the old man, the girl’s mother, the grandparents and fined them various terms for child marriage.
Upazila Nirbahi Officer and Executive Magistrate, Purabi Goldar, carried out the operation in the Sadar Rashi village of Sadar Union in Sadarpur Upazila around 8:30 pm on Friday (November 13).
Mohammad Fakir was sentenced to one year in prison and fined 50,000 rupees in cash for child marriage. In the event of non-payment of the fine, they must serve three more months in prison without parole. The court also sentenced the girl’s mother, Fatema Begum, to six months in prison, Nana Khabir Talukder and Nani Halimunnesa to one month in prison.
The convicted elder Mohammad Fakir is a resident of Shauldubi village in the Krishnapur junction of Sadarpur upazila. The girl is in fifth grade at a local elementary school.
According to judicial sources, the schoolgirl secretly married the old man on October 20 through a notary public. Although the girl’s father prevented her from marrying, her mother secretly arranged the marriage. When Mohammad Fakir went to his father-in-law’s house as a new son-in-law on Friday night, other relatives and neighbors of the girl arrested him and informed the Upazila Nirbahi officer.
Upon receiving the news, the Sadarpur Upazila Nirbahi officer, Purabi Goldar, immediately went to the girl’s home at around 8:30 pm and conducted a mobile court and arrested Mohammad Fakir, mother Fatema Begum and the grandparents. of the girl for being involved in the marriage. Later they were imprisoned for various periods.
Sadarpur Upazila Nirbahi official Purabi Goldar said the punishment was imposed in various sections of the Child Marriage Prohibition Act of 2017. The convicts have been sent to jail.
