The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested BCL activist Rakibul Hossain Niju (18) in a rape case of a 14-year-old girl in the Dariapara area of Sylhet city. He was arrested in Golapganj upazila de Sylhet on Saturday night.
RAB-9 Deputy Superintendent of Police (ASP) Samiul Alam confirmed the arrest to the media last night. Earlier on Friday night, the girl’s mother filed a case against the BCL activist at the Kotwali Police Station of the Sylhet Metropolitan Police (SMP). The girl is now being treated at the One Stop Crisis Center at Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital.
The arrested Niju is a student in class XII of Madan Mohan College in Sylhet. He was released after being arrested in a case of beating and kidnapping three expatriates in front of the Panch Bhai restaurant in the city’s Zindabazar. He is known to be a follower of Piyush Kanti, senior vice president of the incarcerated District Volunteer League. Niju regularly participated in the procession meetings of the Chhatra League. His village home is in Jaua Bazar of Chhatak upazila in Sunamganj District.

In the case, the girl’s family has alleged that Rakibul Hossain Niju raped the girl on the roof of his home last Tuesday. After talking to the girl on her mobile phone, Niju threatened her and said that no one could do anything for her in this incident.
The 14-year-old girl was allegedly raped in a fight in the dormitory of MC College in Sylhet on September 25. The defendants in the gang rape case of a young girl in MC College’s dormitory are also known as Chhatra League activists. Although the identity of the case was not mentioned in the brief of the case.
On August 6 last year, followers of the leader of the Swechchhasebak League, Piyush Kanti, attacked three expatriates in front of the Panch Bhai restaurant in Zindabazar. Six defendants, including Niju, were arrested in the case and released from jail on January 26. They were greeted at the jail door by Awami League-backed Councilor Vikram Kar Samrat in Sylhet City Corporation District 2. The councilman himself is known as a follower of Piyush.
Piyush Kanti Dey is currently in hospital in jail on various charges, including assault on expatriates.
