Dhaka: The government is thinking of selling TCB’s onions online through e-commerce sites, as the onion market in the country has suddenly become volatile.
Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi made the remarks at a press conference in the conference room of the Ministry of Commerce on Wednesday (September 18) on the situation of stocks, supply and prices of essential commodities, including onions.
At this time, the Secretary of Commerce. Zafar Uddin, Additional Secretary Obaidul Azam and Additional Secretary Sharifa Khan were present.
The minister said TCB never imports more than 10,000 to 12,000 metric tons of onions per year. In three or four months they sell two thousand three thousand tons. This time we are already planning to bring 30 to 40 thousand tons. After stopping onion exports to India, we believe that we will import a lakh of onions through TCB. ‘
He said TCB alone would not be able to sell these onions due to the labor crisis. So we will sell onions through e-commerce companies. We have high hopes of being able to sell at least 10 to 12 thousand tons of onions per month at affordable prices through e-commerce. Last time I also distributed imported onions by TCB but also via CD. This time these initiatives have been taken.
The Trade Minister said: “Last time, we also subsidized the onions that were imported by the big traders outside of TCB import.” In this case, some new distributors were appointed in violation of TCB rules. The onions were also sold through OMS distributors. Once again, the onion market will be kept under control by following these methods. The experience of the last time is very useful to us this time.
Talks have been held with large business groups to import onions from other countries and they have pledged to cooperate again, he said.
The Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) has been selling onions at 30 Tk per kg since last Sunday due to the instability in the onion market. A buyer can buy a maximum of 2 kg of onion in a TCB truck.
