Mahmudul Islam, general secretary of the Bangladesh Taekwondo Federation and executive member of the Bangladesh Olympic Association, said there has been a great response from parents, especially the parents of girls, in recent times. For a few days, girls of different ages have been saying on the phone that they want to learn taekwondo.
Taekwondo teaches intelligence, thoughtfulness, and techniques to avoid danger. And if he attacks physically, the aggressor is taught that if he hits any part of the body, he can be easily overpowered.
However, parents and activists for the rights of women and children say that self-defense tactics cannot be seen as a solution to stop crimes such as rape. This requires ensuring prompt punishment of the guilty. Rape is increasing in the country. There is concern among parents about this. The maximum punishment for rape is the death penalty, which has recently been enacted in the Ordinance for the Suppression of Abuse of Women and Children.
People associated with different federations, including taekwondo, wushu, and judo, say that different self-defense strategies emphasize discipline, physical fitness, self-confidence, and safety. The rape of women and children, sexual harassment in the streets has increased the interest of parents to teach self-defense techniques to their daughters. While many organizations offer martial arts training online, the number of interested parties is growing.
